I don't even know where to start. There has been so much that has gone on with life that I haven't wanted to write it down.

My hubby was finally diagnosed with Psoriatic Arthritis last year after having suffered for SEVEN years in extreme pain. No one should ever have to live with that amount of pain. I left for work many mornings with him unable to get out of bed or even stand me touching his hand. We finally found a Rheumatologist that would listen to him and was able to diagnosis him on the first visit. She is amazing and she has given him (and us) our life back. I have to inject him with Chemo once a week, a immunosupressant every other week, and he's currently on 11 other medications. But he's able to do things he hasn't done in years. We went through some really dark times trying to find out what was wrong but we have been blessed to finally have an answer.

On March 3rd of this year, my mother-in-law was killed when she was struck by a car while crossing the street. It's been almost 9 months and it still doesn't seem real. I find myself wanting to call and ask her questions or get her advice. I don't think it will every fully sink in that she's no longer here. She still had so much to give in her life. I can only hope she is at peace and we will see her again one day.

I want to write more but sometimes the words just don't come.

So for now, I'll just keep trying.

Gina is a 1 year old, 80 pound Pit Bull mix that was rescued from death row. She is such a sweet spirit and wants nothing more than to be right by your side. She loves chasing butterflies, playing fetch with her ball, and being goofy! She is housebroken, able to do sit, down, roll over, and stay on command. She LOVES her daily walks and does VERY WELL on her leash. She is learning to socialize with other dogs, does well with children, and LOVES meeting new people. Thank goodness the holidays are over! Work is finally back to normal and I can breathe easier. It is fr-eezing here in Texas and we have been bundled up for the last few days. The puppies don't want to do much more than snuggle up and steal our blankets!

I've been disconnected from the world lately thanks to the flu. I haven't been this sick in a long time and I'm ready to feel human again. Plus, the 90 degree weather is supposed to be gone. So that's good.

Oh, and one of my cats gave himself a case of self-induced food poisoning. Note to self: Do NOT leave chicken to thaw out on the counter. So Mr. Maceo is at the vet receiving IV fluids and lots of other stuff. That, and he bought himself a good dose of elephant tranquilizer to boot. Hopefully, he won't remember much.

Lola has made a seamless transition into our household despite all the different changes she's had over the past week. Nothing like being brought to a warm, cozy, loving home and then being promptly shipped off to have your girlie parts taken out. Poor Lola.

Anyways, back to the story. Seems this little girl has a wee bit of a gas problem. The wee part being a major understatement. Seriously. She could wake the dead.So now, my bedtime routine will include this:

I am awakened rather suddenly a few mornings ago. My restful slumber is no more. Jolted awake by a cold, wet nose in my armpit. I glanced out of the window to see that it is barely, and I do mean barely, light outside. More nuzzling of the wet nose is followed by a big, wet slobbery tongue on my face.

I open my left eye to see little Lola looking at me. I know what she's thinking: Lady.....Lady! Hey Lady! It's light outside lady! I'm all done sleeping now.....Lady, it's time to play!

Don't get me wrong, she's cute and all. But Livvie never does this. She's the sleeping-in-kind-of-girl. She'd rather be good and wedged under some pillows or a pile of blankets. So would I.

The nose. The licking. The barking at my alarm clock. No more sleep for me.

Sleep. Sleep? Who needs sleep when it's light outside lady?

Her name is Lola

This is Lola. She was found in the middle of a very busy highway and was about to be hit by a car. Luckily, she was rescued by someone who cared enough about her well being. The couple that found her could not keep her and wanted to send her to a shelter. But here's the thing, no shelters will take any pit bull mixes. They are immediately euthanized. She is such a sweetie and wants nothing more than to be loved on. She is probably no older than 2 years and it looks like she has already had a litter. Definitely on the skinny side and has a BIG appetite. She has gotten along well with Livvie so far and has lots of energy. I think once she gets in a good exercise routine, she will do well. We took her for a walk last night and she did really well. She wanted to walk right next to Livvie most of the time. We put a her in a kennel several times but she did not appreciate it. Needless to say, she slept in our bed last night. Most of the time it was on top of my head! We are having her spayed and shots done this week. Our plan is to foster her until we can find her a permanent home. I just can't bear the thought of her being put to sleep.

The Pit Bull: An Endangered Breed

How can you not love this sweet face? Our sweet baby Livvie (as I call her) was dropped off at a shelter at just 4 days old, along with her mother and 9 siblings. Luckily for her, she was taken in and fostered by an amazing woman who has dedicated her life to rescuing dogs. Had she been left at the shelter, she would have most likely been euthanized for being a Pit Bull Mix.

She is unbelievable with children. She is at her happiness when our neighbors or family come over with children. She follows them around the house with a smile on her face; ready and willing to receive and give affection to her visitors. We frequently babysit for our neighbor whose son is 8 months old. Livvie wants nothing more than to be right next to him; she's always up for a cuddle with "her" baby.

You can find a very interesting article here about how Pit Bulls are becoming an endangered breed. Just simply for being born, they are subjected to being taken from their owners and the only homes they know. Did you know that a child is 3 times more likely to be harmed at the hands of their parents then being attacked by a dog?

I have been thinking about this post for over a week now. Many of the blog hits I have received are from my comments and involvement at overmckmama.blogspot.com. I have been very upfront about my opinions of Mckmama (Jennifer Mckinney) and I make no apologies.

I originally found her blog through the family of baby I had taken care of in the NICU. Being a nurse, and someone that deals with critically ill babies, I was taken by her story. My MIL is a labor and delivery nurse and I have heard many stories from her 20+ years of experience of dealing with patients. Something never really sat right with the story but then again, I never gave it much thought. I happen to follow many blogs of families with children that are in the NICU and her particular blog was always a bit different. Nothing to do with writing style, photograply, crunchy parenting.; just something not right about the story.

After Stellan was born and proclaimed "healed", I started having serious doubts. I have first hand knowledge about SVT in neonates/pediatric patients as well as hydrops fetalis. Nine years of experience in a very busy NICU, I have taken care of these patients. ANY infant with this diagnosis warrants extremely close monitoring after birth. Even though he had no signs of SVT or hydrops at birth does not mean that damage to the heart has not occurred.

Fast forward to Boston, the whole April Rose saga, and the last SVT episode. I have NEVER EVER seen a parent take a picture of a child while an emergency situation is happening. I have picked wailing mothers up off the floor as CPR is being performed on their baby. I have cried right along with mothers as their dying child has been handed to them. I have held and rocked dying babies because their mothers refused to come see their dying child. I cannot fathom, in my wildest dreams, posting a picture of that happening to my child instead of being right at their side.

I personally will not get into the entire religious debate. Asking for scores of people to pray for your child, asking them to post buttons to link to your website and not have the decency to return the favor is just PLAIN WRONG. I don't care what God, religion, or sect that you believe in. There are just some things that are common courtesy.

There is also the debate of whether or not someone has the right to look up public records or not. This is my opinion. If you choose to put your life out for the world to see, label yourself as a professional blogger, then that is just comes with the territory. I am not one to be secretive about my life and what has happened. If those events did not occur, I would not be the person I am today. The people who know me in life, will tell you that I don't mince my words or sugar coat my life. It is what it is. If you ask me a question about what I think, I will give you the answer. Not what you want to hear, but what my honest opinion is.

The point of my involvement with overmckmama is that I want people to not blindly follow someone to the point of ignorance. No life is perfect, no family is perfect, no faith is perfect. Please do not associate the urging for you to view her life as a hand of friendship. It is a business.
Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.

Her children deserve her time, her husband deserves her time and her family deserves her time. Sooner of later, something's gotta give.

Our journey just took a detour

I have thought about how to start this post a million times. I'm not really sure there is a good way to start out. We moved to Texas a few years ago for several different reasons; better pay, more affordable housing, closer to family, etc. Never did I realize until now that our move really had nothing to do with any of those things. Two days after my Dad's birthday, he called to tell me he had been diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease. I had known for a few months that he had been having trouble because he called to ask me about different symptoms. Being the only nurse in the family, it is not unusual to have someone ask me questions. I had urged him to go see his doctor so he could get a proper diagnosis. He suspected Parkinson's as did I. But the finality of the diagnosis hit really hard. I told him that no matter what, I would take care of him. When he needs more help, I told him, he has a place to live and be taken care of. He's my father and has loved me, provided for me my entire life. It's my turn to return the favor. Thankfully, his doctors are in one of the top research hospitals in the country. I am still trying to work all of this out in my mind. But for now, even though this detour was unexpected, it still our journey.

sunburns sourdough and sadie

San Francisco was a blast. We got upgraded to a mega suite in our hotel and it was so so cool. Got sunburned on a cold, foggy day. I'm still peeling and it's driving me crazy. Ate some fantastic sourdough from Boudin's bakery and managed to bring some home too. Went to Alacatraz and it was absolutely unbelievable. I would highly recommend going on the tour.
We arrived home to find out Sadie (one of our cats) had a rupture abscess on her hindend. So it was off to the vet for debridement and 10 days of antibiotics. It's healing very nicely and she's happy to be out of isolation!

Otherwise, it's back to work and dealing with family drama. You know, same old shit.

San Francisco!

In less than two days, we are headed to San Fran for our anniversary. Not sure if I'll be able to update while we are there since the hotel charges for internet access. I cannot wait to get there so we can enjoy the gorgeous weather and head to Chinatown for some fabulous food.We're going on the Alcatraz tour this time since we missed it before.

So off to pack (after I love on the very cute 7 month old I'm babysitting at the moment!)....

Sadness

Do you ever see someone or hear of something and all of a sudden, you feel this profound sadness? The kind that lays so heavy on your heart that you just can't shake the feeling?

I was talking with my mother the other day and she tells me "You know, S is back in jail again. She was arrested for assault at a homeless shelter." That's when the heavy sadness hit. It's still here as I write these words.

S is my ex-sister in law who has chosen to live her life a way most of us would never want to live. She was married to my brother and they had two beautiful children together. S had always had problems with alcohol/substance abuse/getting in legal trouble. But when she got married and was pregnant, she seemed to settle down. She could have had such a beautiful life. But she chose to waste the opportunity and turn her back on those she loved. She was diagnosed with bipolar disorder which only complicated matters. My niece was 11 months old when S left. She left an 11 month old and a 3 year old. I cannot fathom, in the deepest part of my soul, walking out on 2 small children.

Every once in a while, we'll here about what S is doing and whether she has landed herself back in jail. She refuses to get the help she needs and really, only has herself to blame. We had a falling out shortly before she left and I have never had any sympathy towards her. But hearing the words "She was arrested for assault at a homeless shelter" made my heart sink. I feel sorry that she has missed out on her beautiful children. I feel sorry that her life has come to the point of living in a homeless shelter.

My mind knows that these were her choices and she will have to be held accountable for her actions.

But my heart is profoundly sad.

It's official. My co-workers are sick of me counting the day/hours/minutes until I leave for vacation. I have talked about taking this trip since March and they have finally had enough.....

This is like the 500th straight day of being near or over 100 degrees. Ok, maybe not the 500th day, but you catch my drift. Everyday, as I get in my car and beg the air conditioner to please, please keep working, I have to wonder about this whole Texas thing.

I'm just kidding. I really do love Texas. I just hate the heat and really, really hate opening up the electric bill. Only 85 more days till Fall.

out with the new and in with the old

I went to a wedding on Saturday for one of my co-workers. It got me thinking about our wedding and starting our life together. We did live together for a little over 2 years before we got married. Hubby bought the first house we lived in; a cute little house that was just under 1000 square feet. Sometimes I miss the coziness of it.....sometimes. One thought lead to another as I began looking at our house now. We have a grand total of 3 pieces of furniture that we purchased new. Three pieces in over 10 years. Everything else was from family or things we have bought along the way. I love the memories that come with a piece of furniture. For us, in our house, it's out with the new and in with the old.

We have three toilets in our house between two people so there should be no problem, right?
Well......currently there are issues. The one in our bedroom has a bad valve and is currently not working. The second one is in our half bath and the almost 40 year old seat has a nice crack in it. Then there is the third one....... It has a lovely west facing window right above the toilet. However, when it's 9000 freakin' degrees outside, going in there feels like Calcutta in July.

So really, there's no clear winner in our house.

Father's Day

My dad has been a hardworker all of his life. He grew up on a farm with 9 other siblings and learned to pick cotton probably before he learned to talk. He joined the military when he was 18 and was quickly shipped to Vietnam. He served his country for 38 years before retiring. But that's just it, he's never really retired. He is now raising two grandchildren. He once told me that he never envisioned having to raise his grandchildren at his age. He also told me that he couldn't imagine his life any other way.

Dad, you taught me how to work hard, stand up for myself, and to not worry about the small stuff. I hope when I have grandchildren, they look up to me like yours look up to you. I love you and Happy Father's Day.

Baby

My neighbor's are on vacation and have left us with taking care of their baby. Not an actual baby, mind you. Baby is a squirrel who is quite spoiled. She has been raised by hand as her mother was hit by a car, leaving Baby as an orphan. She has a rough life.....really, she does. She comes running as soon as she hears the lid come off her giant container of sunflower seeds. Baby has her own babies right now, so she's a bit on edge. Never are her little ones out of their mother's sight. My husband has been around Baby more than I have. He and my neighbor will sit on the porch, talking about whatever men talk about when their wives aren't around. She typically hops up on the edge of the couch and waits for the shelled pecans to be handed out. Some would say she's well trained but I think she has done the training.

Baby has a rough life....she really does.

I swore I would never have a blog. But you know what they say, never say never. I like to keep my life simple; it's just easier that way. I'm learning that the important things in life are what matter most. 12 years ago I met my sweet husband and it gets better every day. We've had our share of difficulties, just like everyone else. I wouldn't trade one minute of my time with him. Texas may be where we live, but home is wherever we are together.
